ABIKU

Abiku, the born-dead
Round the oil pot
Leaking the grease that bubbles
You neither stay nor leave
But browsing to and fro the earth
Thousands of gold and silver
Will not appease you
Nor sacrifices of a sweet savor
Can make you stay
For the spirits of your
Soul-mates are driven your
Erratic spirit into the ethereal world
Of your kindred.

Abiku, the monster child
Naked you stripped yourself
Under the bamboo trees
With a leaf of plantain
Tied to your waist
In the market of your spirit world.

Your moody countenance drags
In the mud makes your body-stale
And your philosophical scar shows
Your rebirth and the appearance
Of your first stay
Abiku the born-dead
Of the ethereal world.

Abiku, according to the Yoruba traditional believe is a child that deliberately inflict pains in the lives of the parents by "coming and going through several seasons". Abiku always put trauma in the life of the mother, the birth of abiku always attracts little or no joy as people believe such child will only live on planet earth for a while. There are names for abiku in the Yoruba traditional setting such as the name of the late philanthropist Chief M.K.O Abiola "Kasimawo"

"Abiku" is a Yoruba word that can be translated as "predestined to death". It is from (abi) "that which was born" and (iku) "death".
According to the writer and the poem we can see more about what Abiku means in the last paragraph.
In essence to Abiku we can also figure out the Theme of Helplessness : everyone especially the mother is helpless as Abiku torments them. There's nothing they could do to stop Abiku, as all effort fails.
Theme of Belief in the supernatural - the belief that it is the same child that dies that is being born, shows the belief in another world outside this.
In conclusion,Abiku are given names that are totally different from others, that gives believe to make them live longer

From this poem ABIKU, The poem concentrates on the re -occurrence of a child (born dead), which literally means the child comes and goes i.e dies after birth which isn’t a good experience for the parents of such, leaving them with a tag that’s is not favorable .
The most annoying of all is that there’s no sacrifice that would work in honor to make such child stays

Because the child abiku is brought into the world (given birth to) there are different situation of abiku children there are some situations whereby an abiku child will come to the world at least five times or four times or some even more than, an abiku child is said to be a child of supernatural power they come into this world and they live within a short period of time then when they're coming back they have or Mark which shows they've been to the world more than once or twice or even three times.Abiku children brings a kind of sorrow to their parents who bring them to the world
