IN THE HAUNTED NIGHT

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

In the haunted night
Late travellers walk alone,
Unaware of loathsome things
Following them to their home.

Hideous night creatures
Lurking in every shadow,
While bat-wing monsters soar
Watching you walking below.

Night Gaunts, Verdillacs, shoggoths
Watching you slowly walking,
Unwary of flying behemoths
Who just overhead are stalking.

While underground, burrowers
Following your every movement,
Keeping in perfect step with you
By sniffing out your scent.

In the haunted night
Malevolent shadows follow you,
Throughout the doom-curse night
Watching everything you do.

Crawlers leave a trail
Of loathsome blue-green slime,
Hunting human beings down
Dissolving them in nighttime.

Leviathan beasts smash their way
Through homes, hospices, and hotels,
Gulping down all living things
They hunt out purely by smell.

Death is coming sooner
Than most villagers could foresee,
From out of the pitch-black night
Incapable of showing any mercy.
