Life

I have dreamt of the world in a barren hut in a refugee camp
Breathing the toxic fumes emitted by a kerosene lamp
World so dim, full of grim, misery to the brim
Death on the door step, survival chances very slim
Hyenas’ laughter mixed with nightly mothers’ silent cries
The weak dies leaving behind the “strong” with bony faces and sunken eyes
The living dead lives to die another day
Read a prayer for the dead only for death to again prey
Wait for another day and night to pass
Life felt like we were going through the middle of an hourglass
Full of hope during the day only to be covered with the dark realities of the night
My mind escaped my entrapped body before the morning sunlight

I have dreamt of a thousand dreams and woke up to one reality
Isn’t that exactly the definition of insanity
I have only known a depraved, crazed, and murderous world to survive
I escape nightly the daily despair to feel alive
Only to wake up frozen in standstill
Is it me then or is the world mentally ill
Am I responsible for my world is my world responsible of me
My mind is setting me free
