THE HUNTED

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

The hunted roams 'cross the globe
Throughout verdant forestlands,
Throughout murky weedy swamps
Right across hot desert sands.

The hunted never dares to stop
Trying to sleep while on the run,
Not quite sure what is pursuing, but
If it catches him, his time is done.

He's been running for centuries
Pursued since the dawn of time,
Across frozen Arctic wastelands
Then across sun-drenched climes.

A prehistoric thing chases him
Maybe humanoid, and maybe not,
From an era he can't even remember.
From a time that humanity forgot.

Loping 'cross the hills and valleys
He keeps up a steady even pace,
For if he tires, running too quickly
Then he will surely have lost the race.

An athlete from another aeon
Forced to run just to stay alive,
If the thing chasing catches him
Then he knows he cannot survive.

Still, he continues ever onwards
Trotting carefully through the years,
Knowing that the Follower is coming
And that at last it is drawing near.
