Un soir (II)

Emile Verhaeren 1855 (Sint-Amands) – 1916 (Rouen)

Sous ce funèbre ciel de pierre,
Voûté d'ébène et de métaux,
Voici se taire les marteaux
Et s'illustrer la nuit plénière,
Voici se taire les marteaux
Qui l'ont bâtie, avec splendeur,
Dans le cristal et la lumière.

Tel qu'un morceau de gel sculpté,
Immensément morte, la lune,
Sans bruit au loin, ni sans aucune
Nuée autour de sa clarté,
Immensément morte, la lune
Parée en son grand cercueil d'or
Descend les escaliers du Nord.

Le cortège vierge et placide
Reflète son voyage astral,
Dans les miroirs d'un lac lustral
Et d'une plage translucide ;
Reflète son voyage astral
Vers les dalles et les tombeaux
D'une chapelle de flambeaux.

Sous ce ciel fixe de lagune,
Orné d'ébène et de flambeaux,
Voici passer, vers les tombeaux,
Les funérailles de la lune.
