Age Does Matter

Analie C. Fernandez 1975 (Catanduanes)

I want someone to grow old with,
Too young, too old, I must forbid.
Transformed into a butterfly,
What my will want I must comply.

Done that, been through it, I must say,
So, in love, I don't want to play.
In the clerestory I pray,
One in mind would come to sashay.

It is okay to set our bar,
I did mine. It might be too high.
But, that's what on my mind so far.
Must not fall if someone says "Hi"

I love my two boys all my heart.
One day, they will become grown men.
They'll find each other's counterpart,
I've tried to be fair with all men.

Heartbreaks. Spare my sons from them.
'Cause, I've already went through 'em.
Universe, this is my request,
I want someone to grow old with.

About this poem

I went through different relationships throughout my lifetime without knowing their ages first--some were too young while others were too old---and all of them were failed ones! (divorced and breakups!). And my heart, my mind, and my soul are really tired, So, one Sunday, on November 7, 2021, by my living room's window, I asked myself what will be my ideal man if ever I will date again. After a brief pause, I was sure I now know -- I decided to write it in poem and entitled it "Age Does Matter" for this time I told myself I will be aware of any suitors' age before embarking to a relationship! For now, I am enjoying my singlehood.
