Par les pays des soirs, au nord de ma tristesse,
Mous d'automne, le vent se pleure en de la pluie
Et m'angoisse soudain d'une nuée enfuie,
Avec un geste au loin d'âpre scélératesse.

Est-ce la mort qu'annoncerait la prophétesse,
Au fond de ce grand ciel d'octobre où je m'ennuie
- Depuis quel temps ? - à suivre un vol d'oiseaux de suie
Tourner dans l'infini leur si même vitesse ?

Attendre et craindre d'être ! Et voir, en attendant
Toujours le même rêve, en l'air moite et fondant,
Avec ces cormorans de deuil curver des lignes,

Le soir, quand le pêcheur lassé de la douleur,
Celui dont la nuée interprète les signes,
Pêche de la rancune en les bas-fonds du coeur.
