Love's Illusion

Love’s Illusion

In a distant time and place
That cute boy with the dark hair and shy smile
   touched my innocent heart.
Puppy love
Cartoon heart eyes
Valentines left on a desk in the hope that one would be returned.
I didn’t understand the feelings back then
Perhaps I never will.

I saw him again
in another time and place.
Spotted from afar, heart jumping in anticipation
But only for a moment --
the spark wiped out in an instant.
He wasn’t present in his
                                        red beret.

Many years passed
And our paths crossed again.
He wasn’t sure if I remembered him
Made me laugh, smdh.
How could anyone forget their first infatuation?

Yet,
After all these years
there’s still an undeniable stirring at the thought of him.
Vestiges of a long ago past?
The profound grip of a childhood fantasy…
I try to shake off the absurdity of it all.

The sweet memories make me smile,
but they also make me sad
that I’ll never have the chance to know
    if it was real…
Or if it was just an illusion.
