Des villages plaintifs et des champs reposés,
Voici que s'exhalait, dans la paix vespérale,
Un soupir doucement triste comme le râle
D'une vierge qui meurt pâle, les yeux baissés,

Le coeur en joie et tout au ciel déjà tendante.
Les vents étaient tombés. Seule encor remuait,
Là-bas, vers le couchant, dans l'air vide et muet,
Une cloche d'église à d'autres répondante

Et qui sonnait, sous sa mante de bronze noir,
Comme pour un départ funéraire d'escortes,
Vers des lointains perdus et des régions mortes,
La souffrance du monde éparse au fond du soir.

C'était un croisement de voix pauvres et lentes,
Si triste et deuillant qu'à l'entendre monter,
Un oiseau quelque part se remit à chanter,
Très faiblement, parmi les ramilles dolentes,

Et que les blés, calmant peu à peu leur reflux,
S'aplanirent - tandis que les forêts songeuses
Regardaient s'en aller les routes voyageuses,
A travers les terreaux, vers les doux angelus.
