The Night Vigil

Jerry Lovelady 1954 (Texas)

Swaddled in swank serenity
the sleepy twilight world
gives birth to another
quintessential day
damp and dripping
with morning's birth waters.

The wild rooster sentry vainly
tries to wake the napping sun.
He signals the frogs
and crickets to silence
their long vigils over at last.

About this poem

Birth of day poem, literary style popular in the 18th and 19th century poets of Europe. This one is without all the "thees and thous", and abrupt contractions so common in that kind of poetry.
