The Hunt

Hugh Mitchell 1959 (Kentucky)

Clearly, crisply, cleanly convenes the cloudless dawn
Barking, bawling, beagles bowling 'cross the lawn
Handsome, high-strung horses, harnessed in their best
Rangy, red-capped riders, ready for the test

Bleating, blaring bugles, blowing out the call
Avid, anxious, answers arise from one and all
Stomping, snorting stallions, summoned to their post
Howling, heaving hounds, hover round their host

Sniffing, snarling, snapping, seeming mesmerized
Galloping, grasping, gliding, gaining on the prize
Fiery, fearful, frantic flees the frightened game
Panicked, passioned, pushing pressing for the flame

Creeping, cunning, careful, closing for the kill
Eager, earnest, edgy echoes deathly still
Cautious, cruelly, cleanly, comes the killing blow
Heady, heartened, humbled, homeward now they go.
