THE PLACE NEXT DOOR

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

An innocent-looking old house
Sits right on the edge of town,
By daylight it is harmless, but
Never go there after sundown.

Eerie shadows are hiding there
Waiting to come out at twilight,
Goblins, gremlins, manticore
All lurk in the house by night.

Ghostly shades and phantoms
Swirl around the darkened place,
Headless abominations lurk
And creatures without any face.

Drifters, postmen, once-were people
All flourish throughout its walls,
Harvesters, icemen, and creepers
Sideling around its murky halls.

Beautiful ghosts are prevalent
Within the ancient house,
Whisperers speaking quietly
While evil Banshees shout.

Eerie gliding shadowy figures
Sailing through the musty air,
Searching out the innocent
Whom they desire to scare.

Green men, blue men, fire owls
Inch like slugs across the floor,
If the twilight has already fallen
Don't go into the place next door!
