Longing for God
Richard Newton Sherrer 1951 (Easton)
As a deer pants for flowing streams,
So does my soul pant for the Lord;
With the yearning as though it seems,
As if I am being ignored.
My soul thirst for the living God,
When shall I go in front of Him;
Worshipping to honor and laud,
Anxiety making me feel grim.
My tears as my food day and night,
Others saying, “Where is your God?”
I just want to walk in His light,
Since I know He is not a fraud.
For these things I do remember,
As I am pouring out my soul;
With the problems I encumber,
I need for the Lord to control.
Why has He gone and cast me down,
Causing turmoil within me;
I need to get rid of this frown,
Showing His face so I can see.
Deep calls unto hearing the roar,
Of the roar of His waterfall;
His breakers and waves as they pour,
For His voice to answer my call.
By day He commands steadfast love,
At night His song is within me;
A prayer to my God up above,
To take my life and let it be.
So why has He forgotten me?
Why do I continue mourning?
Oppression of my enemy,
Keeps tormenting without warning.
With a deadly wound in my bones,
My adversaries are taunting;
Their beating is causing my moans,
Giving nightmares that are haunting.
I still have a hope in the Lord,
I shall praise Him for salvation;
Continuing in one accord,
Being as His new creation.
