The Spark

Diane Gerardino 1961 (New York)

The Spark

A flicker of light, a spark
Begins to slowly move forward
Growing deeper red, orange and blue.
Licking the surface.
Consuming it till it darkens.

Soon the little flicker has grown
Spreading out in all directions.
Eating away the wood surface.
Burning all in its wake,
Leaving behind nothing but the charred remains
Of what once was.

The dance of the flicker, soon to be
The dance of the flames.

This is the beauty of a fire.
A sight to behold.
Ever-changing, never the same.
What started as a mere spark
Into a multicolored flame
Of red, blue, orange, and white.

About this poem

I was on a camping trip and one night while sitting alone at the fire, these words began to flood my mind. Enjoying my solace I composed this poem. Hope you like it.

Diane Gerardino

My poetry is random. It is as if something sets a light inside me and the words just seem to roll out. I have only written a few poems. I live in Washington state on a small farm. I enjoy my life here with my wife and mother-in-law and all our animals. more…
