We Are Denizens of The Same Ilk

To know one’s culture
is to reveal its myths;
and its legends.

To discover another’s,
is to revel
in its myths,
and its legends.

To know yet another,
and another…

Is to begin to discover
the common thread,
which links us all…
as denizens of the same ilk.

About this poem

This poem, “We are Denizens of The Same Ilk,” was written with the aim of persuading humanity and world civilizations to better understand the significance, as well as the implications of the ecological, economic, social, and cultural crises we encounter daily, year after year, when we are motivated by selfish goals that are unmindful of the immeasurable potential we are graced with when we work collectively for the betterment of the human species and for the planet that we collectively call our home. When we ignore this opportunity, we encounter dark archetypal forces at work that impede that effort. Global financial crises, perennial international conflicts, human rights struggles, global outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics serve only as as archetypal images that remind us of the urgent need for collective therapeutic intervention. Certainly by now, we must acknowledge that we are our brothers planetary keepers. This poem, written in 1982, is a plea for humanity to embrace a collective consciousness to heal the planet of its many human imperfections.
