L'enclos

Quatre fossés couraient autour de l'enclos. Or,
Quand le soleil de Mai, brûlant l'air de ses flammes,
Sabrait leur eau dormante avec toutes ses lames,
La ferme s'allumait d'un encadrement d'or.
Ils s'étendaient, plaqués au bord de mousse verte
Et de lourds nénuphars étoilant le flot noir.
Les grenouilles venaient y coasser, le soir,
L'oeil large ouvert, le dos enflé, le corps inerte.
Des canards pavoisés y nageaient fiers et lents,
Des canards bleus, verts, gris, pourpres, des canards blancs,
Des canards clairs et blancs, avec un grand bec jaune ;
Ils y plongeaient leur aile et leur ventre lustré,
Et les pattes battant les eaux, le col doré,
Cassaient rageusement des iris longs d'une aune.
