DEAD OF THE NIGHT

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

In the dead of the night
Wicked predators roam,
Through the streets and alleys
Searching for those out alone.

Malevolent phantoms hiding
Within the shadows of night,
Watching for lone walkers
Strolling out after twilight.

Villainous creatures stalking
Out in the darkened streets,
Hunting for late stragglers
Hoping to very soon feast.

Omnivores and carnivores
Craving to feed soon,
While the hunting is good
'Neath the faint light of the moon.

In the dead of the night
Loathsome creatures prowling,
Scaring everyone they meet
With their ravenous howling.

Bat winged monsters soaring
Away up in the night sky,
Terrifying late travellers
With their heinous cry.

Shocking malformed beings
Straight out of Dante's Hell,
Make you think you're dreaming
Or under some horrid spell.

In the dead of the night
When the wary are safe inside,
Foolish people are wandering
With nowhere left to hide.
