Simply Me

My father is black,  my mother is white
On census forms I am asked to make a choice
Because it is law, does that make it right?

Please don't define me by the color of my skin
Why can't I be appreciated for the beauty within?
Why must I choose , why must I pick one or the other
By doing so, am I denouncing my mother or father?

My curly hair is not silky straight
Nor do I sport an afro
The color of my skin is neither black or white
I am a beautiful honey brown almond cocoa!

Black, afro - american, mulatto, biracial are all terms the world uses to describe me
Why is it so important to put me into a box
Why can't I just simply be me.....
