TERROR TIME

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

The night-time is terror time
The time when evil things abound,
Bat-winged monsters fly overhead
Burrowers tunnel underground.

Prehistoric creatures appear
Ravenous and looking for meat,
Hunting both humans and fauna
Needing very soon to eat.

Terror lurks in every shadow
And down every dark alleyway,
When humans sleep in their beds
Hideous beings come out to play.

Ape-like animals walk the streets
Climbing lamps to look for prey,
Scaling easily the drain pipes
Hunting 'neath the moon's dire rays.

Looking through padlocked windows
Lusting after innocents who sleep,
But afraid to break the glass panes
So round the house they slowly creep.

Gigantic Shoggoths overhead
Search the village on the wing,
Looking for a sign of movement
Ready to eat almost anything.

Night Gaunts haunt the town
Spreading terror in their wake,
With an undying hunger that
Nothing but a feast could slake.

The night-time is terror time
When witches and goblins roam,
And when the wary stay inside
Safely abed in their own home.
