Sous des cieux faits de filasse et de suie,
D'où choit morne et longue la pluie,
Voici pourrir
Au vent tenace et monotone,
Les ors d'automne ;
Voici les ors et les pourpres mourir.

O vous qui frémissiez, doucement volontaires,
Là-haut, contre le ciel, tout au long du chemin,
Tristes feuilles comme des mains,
Vous gisez, noires, sur la terre.

L'heure s'épuise à composer les jours ;
L'autan comme un rôdeur, par les plaines circule ;
La vie ample et sacrée, avec des regrets sourds,
Sous un vague tombeau d'ombre et de crépuscule,
Jusques au fond du sol se tasse et se recule.

Dites, l'entendez-vous venir au son des glas,
Venir du fond des infinis là-bas,
La vieille et morne destinée ?
Celle qui jette immensément au tas
Des siècles vieux, des siècles las,
Comme un sac de bois mort, l'année.
