Spiky Thorns

James E. Spurgeon Jr. 1986 (New Jersey)

Why did you gaze into my eyes
Why did you let me come inside your life
Why twice?! Three, four times even
I said I mean it, you think I'm dreaming
Told you no lies but from me, you hide
And remain hidden, to what you understand
But judgment I offered you not
Instead, my hand
My heart, my love, my breath, my touch
Why turn your face, force my tears
I told you my name, forsook my fears
But do you think of me when I'm not there
An honest question whispered, "who cares?"
I do, I did, I kissed, I licked
I loved and meant
Every last second of it
But what is it worth when failing, filling with hurt
I guess you made your call, evidently, your choice is clear
There's no more room for me here
But who's to say it ever was dear
