OUT OF THE HAUNTED NIGHT

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

Out of the haunted night
Foul predators slowly creep,
Looking for unwary walkers
Wandering like Bo Peep's sheep.

Lost, alone, and so very lonely
The foolish travel out in the night,
Fodder for an evil waterhorse
Out hunting after twilight.

Ceffyl Dŵr, Capaill Uisce, bäckahäst
Each galloping after human prey,
Hoping soon to devour their quarry
Then turn and swiftly lope away.

The slime beast leaves an awful trail
Blue-green acid left upon the ground,
To dissolve the living into oozing filth
For the monster to greedily slurp down.

A pool of foul-smelling sludge
A warning of where the beast has been,
Even other monsters are wary
Of this creature, so obscene.

Out into the haunted night
Only the naive would  ever go,
Unwary of abominations
Like the world has never known.

Stay inside, don't ever linger
Outdoors in the malignant night,
For if the terrors don't devour you
You could very well die of fright.
