They gave themselves

Royston 1946 (Reading)

They gave themselves in bloody war
and months and years will see no more.
They were so young, they were so brave.
Their future and their existence gave.

Midst bombs and bullets they stood their ground,
and no greater love can ever be found.
Then, as they fell in silent sacrifice,
by their death they gave us life.
