Love Again

When in the dark, I saw them kiss
Two lovers embraced with dreamy bliss,
I laughed within myself at this
Ridiculous false display
For if life had taught me nothing else
But this, that love was for myself
And in the hands of someone else
It got trampled along the way.

She was a beauty with raven hair
With elegant form and looks to spare
The way she kissed him standing there
Was criminal to say the least
He stood firm, ‘bout six-foot-two
With muscled frame through and through
Her plans for him he never knew
The eternal nature of the beast

Through tiny portal of human affair
One can look, but never be aware
Of details private, held in the care
Of two lovers in the dark
Her future bright and his becomes dim
The finger points at either one of them
For dreams unspoken and silence again
Can douse the loving spark

But not these two, they were different, say
Than casual lovers who lost their way
And in the light of the brilliant day
I saw her chestnut hair
She twirled and danced in her wedding dress
He’s older now than I first assessed
Gray hairs and wrinkles tell it best
Their love’s beyond compare.

Lovers mature through a shared belief
That difficult days and devastating grief
In the mix of time are relatively brief
When love holds your hand
And if life has taught me nothing else
To put someone’s life before myself
To take my cold heart off the shelf
And learn to love again.

About this poem

Being able to find love again. That's what most people that have been divorced consider a true blessing. The harsh and cynical nature that tries to latch on after a long season of hurt and sorrow can be fairly difficult to shake. But with any hardship comes maturity and wisdom and added patience to overcome. New items brought to the table in any new relationship. Win win.

David A Whitfield

David A Whitfield is a mailman by trade. He writes prose and poetry about life in general. More specifically, he is fascinated by the historical overlay of the downtown area of the city he carries mail in every day. The old buildings and the ancient faces that used to occupy them are a point of much historical research for him. He is currently working on a memoir of sorts that will delve into fun and interesting anecdotes of his over thirty-five year career as a mailman. You can look for his poems here on poetry.com more…
