THE CHOSEN

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

The chosen haunt the night
Wraith-like ghostly things,
Living at the edge of town
Envying the living.

They have no houses to live in
And so reside in rocky caves,
Which double as their living place
And later as their graves.

Jealous of the human race
They slink through town at night,
Hiding in dark alleyways
Then leaving at first light.

Some folk call them monsters
Others claim God's angels,
Some say they're from Heaven
Others swear that they're from Hell.

The chosen are truly beautiful
But a beauty that causes fright,
So they hide in caves by day
And walk alone by night.

Is their beauty God's gift
Or is it from someone else?
Did they come down from Heaven?
Or come up here from Hell?
