Why Did You Have To Go?

Lost in a daze, but stuck in your ways,
I came by to see
Just what there was, and just because
You meant a lot to me.

You gave a look, and I was shook.
Right then I had to know.
And yet you chose to overlook;
You didn't want to go.

Fought tooth and nail, didn't want to fail
But then they had to come.
I have to ask if you knew the task
To which you did succumb.

All the while, never lost your style,
But I'm sure the thought did flow
All through your head, and I'm sure you said
"Why do I have to go?"

Nightfall came fast, you could not outlast;
This did not have to be.
Now we sit and stare at the vacant chair;
Are you looking back at me?

I relive the dread that ran through my head
Because I had to know.
I turn and speak, my voice still weak;
Why did you have to go?
