THE FOLLOWER

The Follower stalks his quarry
Right across this sun-scorched land,
Hoping soon to track them down
Pursuing them 'cross the desert sand.

Their footsteps leave a ready track
That he can so easily follow,
Right across the red sand dunes
Then down into sunken hollows.

He follows them throughout the day
And right on through the night,
Delighting in the battle chase
Drawing power from their futile flight.

Right across the length and breadth
Of the planet, he will gladly travel,
Closing slowly in upon his prey
As their meagre strength unravels.

He hunts their bodies so he can kill
Although to live he devours their souls,
So around the Earth, he goes after them
With a heart that's as black as coals.

The Follower has journeyed far
In a quest for his human prey,
And yet with every step he takes
His quarry gets further away.

Is he tiring, expiring, or just a tease
Hoping to make the sojourn last,
To take even greater pleasure when
He gets to enjoy his sordid repast.
