A break
Thick narrow trees winding together stretching for miles
Rustling and chirping coming from the canopy above
Cacophonous silence surrounding me in a calming embrace
Boots breaking sticks and leaves as I walk
A growing sense of safety as I travel deeper into a natural maze
Allowing my thoughts to drift past me
The farther I travel more distance I put between self and suffering;
to feel safe;
to feel loved;
a break from anxiety;
from depression;
a break from my self doubt
Here I feel strong and free
The woods willingly give their advice and wisdom
Fresh grass and dirt fill the air
I must turn back before the storm
Head back to to the troubles I left behind
Just knowing it’ll pass and I’ll be back here where I belong
Happy and free
About this poem
I wrote this when I felt renewed after a stressful year by taking a trip into a local national park.
