I Raced...

Mike Bailey 1975 (Denver, Colorado)

I raced to the top of the mountain,
I raced through the firing squad too,
I raced to the bottom of the ocean, yeah,
Just because I fell in love with you.

I faced up to all of the odds.
I fell to my knees and I asked all of the Gods.
I wished upon the brightest of stars.
Look into my face, Hell, it still shows the scars.

I dreamed of the ways I could find...
find some way out of this bind,
and still keep a smile on my face.

I admit now, it was me who ran the race.
I raced to the top of the mountain and back.
I raced through the firing squad too.
I raced to the bottom of the ocean, yeah,
Just because I fell in love with you.

About this poem

When we are in a relationship, and we see it falling apart, we often find that our mind races and we do all we can to stop the enevitable from happening. This is the cold truth in this poem.
