SUDDENLY YOU’RE DEAD

Suddenly you're born
On some cold and dreary night,
Too young to know the horror
Of your barely started life.

Unfulfilled you grow until
You're about to start school days,
Like living in a cornfield
That's been turned into a maze.

Suddenly you're twelve
And now afraid of girls,
Unaware these strange creature
Soon will be your whole world.

Then through your teen years
You're stumbling like a toddler,
Still, you're afraid of girls
Because nothing could be odder.

Yet soon you're dating seriously
And suddenly you are engaged,
Then married with two children
One almost of school age.

Then soon your kids have left
And your back there all alone,
Just you, your wife, and Fido
To try to make your house a home.

Suddenly you are retired
No longer stuck in the work grind,
It seems, at last, you're free to live
However, you have a mind.

Then suddenly you're feeble
With aching limbs, bones, and head,
Then all too soon your life has gone
And suddenly you're dead!

THE END

About this poem

I intended this to be a horror poem, but it refused to go that way.
