Five Of Them and the Mole In the Hole

This fairy tale or fairy story
Hope isn’t in any way boring.

This instructive narration tells
About the five forest pals.

There are in fact six characters:
Sixth is the mole – their acquaintance.

I was lucky to hear it from my granny -
As for tales, she knows a good many.

Make yourselves comfortable,
Girls and boys,

Forget for a while
Laptops and toys.

Don’t you worry, girls and boys,
I have a pretty loud voice!

For you right now I will retell,
Maybe your parents will listen as well...

                 * * *

One sunny day the mole
Was sitting in his hole.

The wolf was running past,
A glance at him he cast.

The mole was looking sad,
The wolf stopped dead and said:

Hey! What fine weather!
Let’s play today together.

We gonna play tonight a bit,
There’s five of us, to wit:

I, myself, the fox, the hare
The squirrel and the bear.

The game we like is hide-and-seek
We’ll be playing after classes.

The mole said: My sight is weak
I cannot see without glasses.

The wolf responded: Sorry, buddy,
I cannot be of help, alas!

It’s time to go, in school I study
And soon am having a class.

A couple of minutes since had passed -
This time the fox was running past.

She saw as well the wistful mole
That was sitting in his hole.

The mole still was looking sad,
The fluffy fox stopped dead and said:

What a fine day today!
Maybe you with us will play?

We gonna play tonight a bit
There’s five of us, to wit:

I, myself, the wolf, the hare,
The squirrel and the bare.

The game we like is hide-and-seek,
We’ll be playing after classes.

The mole said: My sight is weak
I cannot see without glasses.

The fox responded: Sorry, buddy,
Can’t be of help, I’m afraid

It’s time to go, in school I study,
And her farewell she bade.

Presently footsteps again he could hear
A moment later the hare appeared.

The hare was happily hopping along
Loudly singing some merry song.

Cheer up! Don’t be so sad!
The hare to the mole said.

Hey! What lovely weather mole!
Do crawl out of your hole!

We gonna play tonight a bit,
There’s five of us, to wit:

The wolf, the fox, the bear,
The squirrel and me, the hare.

The game we like is hide-and-seek
We’ll be playing after classes.

The mole said: My sight is weak
I cannot see without glasses.

The hare responded: Sorry, buddy,
I cannot be of help, alas!

It’s time to go, in school I study
And soon am having a class.

I think you have already guessed
What happened in the story next.

Just like by wolf, the fox, the hare
The same he was told by squirrel and bear.

And the same was the mole’s reply
Accompanied by the plaintive sigh.

They didn’t play after classes that day
But consulted each other, so to say.

The wolf, the fox, and the hare
Headed for somewhere.

The squirrel and bear
On the edge of the wood

Whiling away the time
With some food.

Suddenly the squirrel cried:
Bruin, they have come in sight!

In his turn the bear roared:
Yes, I see them on the road!

The wolf, the fox, and the hare
Soon joined the squirrel and bear.

All of them made for the hole
Where lived the familiar mole.

The mole was definitely bored,
And even sadder than before.

They came close to the  hole -
Much surprised was looking the mole

The bear gently held out his arm -
There was something lying on his palm.

At it he peered getting amazed -
It was the open spectacle-case!

And to the mole all of them said
(who any more wasn’t so sad):

We didn’t play tonight after classes
We decided to buy you these glasses.

We went to the drugstore and, thus,
Now, buddy, you can play with us!

The mole put them on right away
With the words: they are so nice!

Even don’t know what else to say
I can see you perfectly guys!

And they added to the mole
Who crawled out of his hole:

Now that you are wearing glasses
You also can attend the classes!
