To (Never) Have Belonged to Him

From the days of first-felt tippie toes,
And wide eyes searching faces.
Reaching out for strongman's arms,
And feeling naught but spaces.

The need for muscled, safe embrace,
A feeling, selfish love.
To be wrapped inside his arms,
that were beyond my reach, above.

And growing, knowing out there,
Others called him 'dad'.
While I waited by the letterbox,
craving that which I'd never had.

I hated him, I berated him,
I loved him without a face.
Genetically mine, forever theirs,
in my heart, always his space.

To want to feel enough,
To want to feel his pride.
To want to see him, just once
and see his arms, thrown open wide.

To feel him hold me up,
as I shuffle down the aisle,
his reluctance to let his baby go,
she's belonged to him a while.

And though these days women don't belong,
they're individuals in their own right.
For once I'd like to feel like I belong to him,
And I'd like him to hold me tight.
