And We Danced

Lloyd G. Cresci 1956 (California)

I danced with Ethyl again last night,
And she told me the usual lies.
She said we would have the greatest fun,
While she dazzled me with those eyes.
As the music played on through the night,
She sang me a beautiful song.
It had a sensational melody,
And I just had to follow along.
She sang of forever and it was so sweet,
I was hanging on every word.
I was so utterly happy,
And it was so very absurd.
Eventually she just faded away,
As though through a thickening haze.
And as she faded it started to grow,
That old creeping painful malaise.
Brighter and brighter the morning sun,
Revealed what a fool I had been.
My heart sank deep as it came into focus,
That I had been duped again.
I sit here oh so sad and alone,
Now my old friend Ethyl is gone.
And I'm learning the same old lesson again,
The one that I keep getting wrong.

Hint 1:  Ethel is how a girl spells her name.
Hint 2:  Ethyl is only her first name, Alcohol is her last.
