Night's Music

Srutimala Duara 1964 (Guwahati, Assam)

Night's Music

The cicadas called out in a chorus
to the dark sky
A frog joined in the chorus and
the cicadas withdrew in annoyance
The owl hooted from the eaves
to quieten the frog
From some dark tree a keteki shrieked out its heart
making the moon take refuge in the clouds
A wolf howled at the dark side of the moon and
a dog joined in remembrance of his ancestors
A startled cat meowed
her dream of licking up a plate of milky moon  interrupted
On the other side of my bed comes the sound
of  rhythmic snore
