MEGST: MOST EVIL GOODS AND SERVICES TAX

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

“Enslave the poor and outlaw unions!”
That was Little Johnny’s battle cry,
“Utopia is just beyond our sight
“So democracy must surely die!”

“The poor were born to suffer
“And they’ve forgotten how to fight,
“Eureka Stockade has been torn down
“So they’re stranded in their plight.”

“If we help our billionaire mates
“To get richer by evading taxation,
“And pauperise the unemployed
“Then we may yet fix the nation!”

“For poverty is a state of mind
“And our mates do not mind at all,
“’Cause when it comes to paying debts
“They will never get the call.”

“We’ve got to help our mates out
“That’s why they put us in power,
“Democracy is fine in theory
“But it couldn’t last an hour.”

“Not when our blessed boss-mates
“Tell us to tax the poor bloody mob,
“The Most Evil Goods and Services Tax
“Was just what would do the job.”

“It helped us to raises taxation
“For the pensions and charity,
“While slashing taxes for the rich
“Perhaps a slight disparity.”

“Still our mates all shout for joy
“Yes the rich and really chuffed,
“And as for the poor and unemployed
“Of course they’re royally stuffed.”

“Still our mates in Toorak East
“Say, ‘Johnny is our main, main man,’
“‘For when it comes to helping out
“‘Little Johnny sure understands’”

About this poem

I know it is fifteen years since John Howard was evil fascist dictator of Australia, but frankly he will never be able to stop being vilified after his Most Evil Goods and Services Tax, evil IR laws, attempts to enslave the working classes, and other monstrous deeds against the poor and working classes.
