Success Achievers

Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)

Such a thin line,
Success achievers...
Are expected to balance upon.
Under pressure.
As if...
Nothing else matters.
But the pleasing to leave,
Accepted impressions made.
To be judged by those caring less,
What it takes to accomplish one's best.
And the time invested,
With no one else there to know or appear.
Close enough to trust to confess and say,
'I wish I had not worked so hard...
To make my efforts to endeavor,
Seem for me to be so easy!'
Heard to hear from one,
Beyond the having emotional tears to cry.

The only ones who realize,
What it takes to achieve success.
And still receive criticism and disrespect.
Are the ones who remain,
Focused, disciplined and mentally strong.
To tolerate...
The correcting of their mistakes made.
Disappointments to overcome them.
And failure.
Not suspected by those,
Sitting to await for perfection.
In seconds to critique,
One's years of devotion.
And repeated attempts,
To accomplish the impossible.
Until that possibility,
Has been reached to achieve believed!

'Now it is time for 'Me'. My life to live.'

'What are you talking about?
Whose life have you been living?'

'I have been living to prove,
If success is sought...
It is earned not given.
Maybe to make a point to naysayers.
Or to the young people.
Anyone who believes success to achieve,
Happens overnight.
With lots of comments made to say,
What one is doing.
To invest more of their time,
Making impressions.
Eventually to fade pretensions away.

And now?
I have decided,
I've grown tired of competing with myself.
I know what I can do to have done it.
How much success  does it take,
To make one feel successful?

'Tell me about it.
I know of people who have money.
Nice homes and all that stuff.
And still are heard complaining.'

'People given money.
And things to not have earned.
Don't know the meaning of success.
They perceive that a notoriety to get,
With a few names to drop...
Is success for them enough to imitate it.
Success to feel it comes,
When one knows...
That a taking from nothing,
To make it something...
That one day becomes known.
Is a feeling of accomplishment.'

'An accomplishment you say,
You have grown tired of it!'

'Well...
You misunderstood.
My 'tired' to say it,
Means like taking a walk around the block.
Then a nap.'

'So you were not that serious.
Then why say something you don't mean?'

'Whoa...
Aren't you,
The quick to rush to judgement one!
Stop with the accusations.
I am always serious when I lie to myself.
And the evidence I have to prove it!
