THE DEVIL RIDES OUT

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

The Devil rides out
Along the Highway to Hell,
Where yellow flames soar high
Bringing a brimstone smell.

Fearsome yellow imps
Hide in the sun-dried sands,
Waiting for lost wanderers
To reach these awful lands.

Racing out to meet them as
They try to drive on through,
The imps destroy their vehicles
To leave them stranded, doomed/

The Devil rides along alone
Through this loathsome place,
Where nothing good resides
And nothing worthwhile stays.

Along the lonely highway
The Devil's chopper roars,
As through the yellow skies
Bat-winged monsters soar.

Pterodon-like flying fiends
Which obey the Devil's will,
And seeing travellers passing by
Swoop down for the kill.

The Devil rides out
Throughout this dreadful land,
Where nightmare creatures roam
Across the red desert sands.
