To The Haters

Who are you to say -
Anything?
Implying humanity at least,
I grant you that.

What am I granted,
demonized, deified?
Hate is a four-letter word,
Also monosyllabic.

Can you elevate me to “detest?”
I jest! But to you and the rest
I have the same reply:
Does your fixation
With my (purported) foibles
Satisfy? Yet you bravely try.

About this poem

Inspiration gets harder to come by as I get older. When I asked myself why, I found that the more I learn, the more I criticize myself preemptively before I speak. Digging deeper, I felt like my inspiration now is to have the right to be inspired and show it. So this is to either real detractors, or the voices in my head. An effrontery in verse.
