DROUGHT

JP. 1948 (United Kingdom)

DROUGHT

A liquid asset as described
To be conserved perhaps imbibed
And not to waste sent down a loo
Nor hosed away whatever you do

But yet we squander it and more
We can’t say it will replace for sure
So pray to rain gods in the street
That we bear the bane of wetter feet

And emptier the reservoir drains
Until dregs cover last remains
The ghostly sound of one church bell
Commits the parched to an arid hell

Yet still they use the water cool
To wash the car cleaned by the fool
And throw away what is not clear
As the climbing sun begins to sear

Perverse the sprinkler throws to air
That which is shed without a care
Today no one would stop to think
Where tomorrow they might find a drink

But as the lakes and rivers dry
Lush vegetation browns to die
Precipitation falls no more
Upon this green and pleasant shore
