THE PLIGHT OF THE LONELY

The lonely walk in circles
Out late in Gordon Street,
Afraid and tired and heart-sick
Grateful for anyone they meet.

They long for any company
Tradesmen or even the Postie,
They live alone and lonely
Grateful for anyone they meet.

But no-one wants to meet them
There’s no friendly face to see,
They walk for hours in supermarkets
Grateful for anyone they meet.

Walking all the day outside
They’re tired and sore and weary,
But still, they tread the lonely streets
Grateful for anyone they meet.

Heart-sick and heart-broken
They live with lonely fears,
They hate to have to live alone
Grateful for anyone they meet.

Like misguided policemen
They walk along an endless beat,
Tired, and sore, and lonely
Grateful for anyone they meet.

They walk in sunshine or in rain
In storms, and snow, and sleet,
The weather but a minor nuisance
Grateful for anyone they meet.

They walk along in winter chill
And in the endless summer heat,
Loneliness their only enemy
Grateful for anyone they meet.

THE END
