A Lesson in Anatomy

Ron Marcus 1957 (Baltimore)

A Lesson in Anatomy                                By Ron Marcus

Terror is not an act of sadistic ventriloquism
that speaks thru the hands initially
Where a woman's hands have a maternal tendency
to cover up the  lowered drawbridge
of their mouths
as if, to censor the murky depth of the collapsing horror
while a man's hands go religious
forming a steeple-like structure
over their furrowed faces
But by anyone's admission-
Their wounded nest of hands
 may fiercely grip
the momentarily paralyzed sides of their heads
as if to keep-
the stampeding Inferno, contained within

Hands, they may hover
like Urban birds, who suddenly have no safety edge
,to land, and perch upon
When the descending nightmare
of Icarus reborn
fell in collective torment upon New York City
