Belonging for the first time

The first time I felt like I truly belonged
A time I wasn’t thinking of the ways it could go wrong
December of last year
Where there was a quiet inside all of the fear

Rain speckled windows and parks after dark
I let go of not reaching my schools benchmarks
Because I found happiness in people who really care

And that my worth isn’t defined by the straightness of my hair
But in the warmth of my heart, the glow of my smile
These are the things that make me worth while

It’s better late than never
But I truly hope this feeling lasts forever

About this poem

This is a poem I wrote about the first time I felt completely comfortable in my own skin and in who I am as a person as I let go of not reaching the expectations that were laid out for me :)
