Peaceful Evening

The doves flew slowly to the old elm tree
and there perched on a gnarled limb.
They cooed and preened til they fell asleep
as the setting sun grew dim.
A brown chubby rabbit hopped lazily along
toward the cozy shelter of home;
probably singing a happy song
or reciting a soothing poem.
Somewhere a cricket chirped, a bullfrog croaked,
and the stately owl with great yellow eyes just stared.
He, in his speckled brown suit, was cloaked
as he studied the possibilities of E=MC2.
Bass bobbed to the surface for their evening meal
causing circular ripples to appear.
The ripples grew broader but weaker in zeal
and finally they just disappeared.
The sun walked slowly down the western stairs,
til  just its crown could be seen,
and at last it stepped out of sight of the players
as night strode into the scene.
