WORDS OF HATE

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

“I am better than you, my friend”
That’s what I’m taught to say,
For no one is as good as us
As handsome, strong, or brave.

It’s a marching song, a song of hate
Which leaves us proudly standing,
“Give your life to us, you wretch!”
That’s what we’re now demanding.

No one is on Earth’s good as us
No one’s as proud or certain,
These words of hate strengthen us
In ways, we can’t explain.

“March!  March!  March!” is our evil song
“March!  March!  March!” is our loathsome theme,
Marching for the Commonwealth
Marching for country and queen!

We put other nations in their place
Proving to them we are the best,
Moslem, Hindu, or Hebrew too
‘Cause, “East is East and West is West!”

We love to sing our song of hate
At any parade, or sporting event,
To show the world we love ourselves
But for others we have but contempt!

About this poem

I hate jingoism glorified as patriotism. I am opposed to national flags, national anthems, medals, and honours – since mainly dishonourable people receive them.
