THE WAILING CITY

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

The wailing city weeps
For those who once lived there,
But no-one now remains
All life is gone from here.

The wailing city mourns
For the better times long past,
When people filled its streets
Times now left behind.

The wailing city longs
For the returns of its residents,
Taken away by evil forces
In a time now long spent.

A time when the city lived
People jostled through its thoroughfares,
Animals walked along its roads
Yet now no creatures reside there.

It once was a vibrant city
A pillar upon the planet,
Now it's just a ghost town
Oh, so easy to forget.

No-one ever stops there now
It's left off most local maps,
A slice of recent history
No researcher ever taps.

The wailing city cries
For lost glories of the past,
But just as the good die young
Nothing worthwhile ever lasts.
