dirt

Roots holding me down, down...
Loose brown dirt teasingly crumbling apart around and in between the twisted tangled fingers of fiber
Showing minuscule glimpses of radiating light
Filtering through the dark and the damp and the dust
I push globs of mud out of my way only for it to sink back into place
I pull the roots like they are a life vest keeping me afloat to just near the surface
Yet knowing that they are the same force sinking me, embracing my heart like a dream that keeps me hostage in the night
