Lunch With Grandpa

Tin foil crinkles as heavy
hands cradle a familiar warmth.
Watching as each fold is undone
until the steaming heart is revealed.
Ridges of brown and dots beckon
brave mouths but don’t be hasty!
Hand me the grated dairy block
before the bits of seared meat and fat.
For each topping is a purpose
prepared somewhat haphazardly
helping to elevate that mushy
mash nuzzled within the tin.
Take a bite and listen to wandering
whispers of the forming memory:
“Mmmmmm”
