THE AXEMAN COMETH

Phil Roberts 1957 (Melbourne)

The axeman cometh
Yes, Little Johnny cometh,
To cut away our dreams;
His scalpel’s out
His victim’s all kneel,
Listen to them scream.

The axeman’s mission is
To wield his weapon,
And make Australia hurt;
He’ll lower his axe
All our dreams are cut off,
To lie among the dirt.

The axeman threatens
To destroy our country,
And treat us all like scum;
He’ll sell off Telstra
And shut down Medicare,
Yet still he isn’t done.

The axeman reckons
If he lets the bosses,
Sack workers with no excuse;
He’ll lift this country
Back onto its feet,
And things will really move.

The axeman’s promise
Is to reduce all workers,
To something less than slaves;
There’ll be no more dole
And no retirement benefits,
You’ll just work on till the grave.
