THE PIT OF DOOM

For reasons that I don’t know
For crimes I don’t recollect
I was born a hard labor prisoner
And dropped into the pit of doom

The hole is rough and abrasive
Bruising and maiming the heart
Sharp gnarly roots snag
And tear the fabric of reality

I scream in fright and anguish
For someone to halt my fall
But am falling too fast
For anyone’s hand to reach

The most sympathetic soul
Only drops breadcrumbs my way
To give me some energy
For the hope of a rescue someday

The freefall vertigo disorients
And am not sure whether am alive
The tumble and careen concusses
And turns my reality dim

The hiss of the steam of death
Singes the few tendrils of hope
The light at the top end of the tunnel
Disappears to a pinpoint in gloom

The breadcrumbs no longer reach
And the light of day has ceased
I have fallen too deep in doom
Only a noose can save me now
