Castle at Night

Darkness falls
but the city isn’t ready to sleep.
The tourists retreat to restaurants and hotels
and the students crack their books
                                                              maybe.
Oh the history that passed beneath your crumbled walls!
Built, burnt, rebuilt and burnt again
and scavenged until picturesque
May you stand as long as the Neckar flows.
